Apple Store vs. Independent Repair Shop in Ottawa: Which Is Better for Your iPhone?
Ottawa has two Apple Stores and plenty of independent shops. Here's an honest comparison of price, speed, parts and warranty, including when Apple is the better choice.

When an iPhone breaks in Ottawa, most people weigh two options: book a Genius Bar appointment at one of the city's two Apple Stores, or walk into an independent repair shop. We're an independent shop, so we'll be upfront about when Apple is actually the better choice. Here's how the two compare on the things that matter.

When the Apple Store is the better choice
- Your iPhone is under Apple's warranty and the problem is a defect, not damage. Apple fixes defects for free.
- You have AppleCare+. In Canada a screen or back glass repair costs $39 and other accidental damage $129, and eligible battery service is $0.
- You want genuine Apple parts only, for example because you plan to sell the phone soon and want every part to show as "Genuine" in Settings.

When an independent shop is the better choice

- You need it today. No appointment and no mail-in: most screens and batteries at our Bronson Avenue shop take 30 to 60 minutes.
- The fix is small. A charging port that needs cleaning, a speaker, a camera lens or back glass is often quick and inexpensive at a local shop.
- The phone won't turn on and you need the data. Board-level repair and data recovery are specialist jobs independent shops take on.
Parts, "Unknown Part" messages and resale
Apple's Parts and Service History lists the repairs done on your iPhone. Parts installed through Apple's own processes show as Genuine; a non-genuine part shows as Unknown Part, and Apple notes this "might affect the trade-in value of your device." It doesn't stop the phone working. Before any repair, ask the shop which kind of part you're getting. Warranty: what actually protects you
Apple backs its own repairs. An independent shop's repair is covered by that shop's warranty instead; Apple says repairs by independent providers aren't covered by Apple's warranty or AppleCare plans. Frequently asked questions
Does an independent repair void my Apple warranty?
Apple says repairs by independent providers aren't covered by Apple's warranty or AppleCare plans, but may be covered by the provider's own warranty. If your iPhone has a defect and is still under Apple's warranty, go to Apple first; for accidental damage you're paying for anyway, the shop's warranty is what protects you.
Is Apple cheaper if I have AppleCare+?
Yes. With AppleCare+ in Canada, screen or back glass damage costs $39 and other accidental damage $129, and eligible battery service is $0. No independent shop can beat that, so use your plan.
Which is faster in Ottawa, Apple or an independent shop?

Will my iPhone show a warning after an independent repair?

Apple asks you to back up before service. Screen and battery repairs at Hotspot don't erase your phone, but a backup is always good insurance.
