iPad Screen Repair in Ottawa: Glass vs. Display, Cost & Turnaround
On some iPads, a crack means replacing only the glass. On others, the glass and display are one piece. Here's how to tell which you have, and what it means for the price.
Quick answer
It depends on your iPad. The standard iPad has the touch glass and the display as separate layers, so a cracked front can often be fixed by replacing just the glass, which costs less. The iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad Pro have laminated screens, where glass and display are bonded into one part that's replaced together. At Hotspot Mobile Repairs on Bronson Avenue, iPad repairs start from $119.
- Standard iPad: glass and display are separate, so glass-only repairs are often possible.
- iPad Air, mini and Pro: laminated screens, replaced as one unit.
- Image fine but glass cracked? Often just the glass. Lines, blotches or no picture? The display too.
- iPad repairs at Hotspot start from $119, with a free diagnostic and a 100-day parts warranty.
iPads spend their lives in backpacks, on kitchen counters and in the hands of kids, so cracked screens are common. The good news is that an iPad screen repair can cost less than you'd expect, depending on one detail: whether your model's glass and display are separate or bonded together.
Is it the glass or the display that's broken?
An iPad screen has two main parts: the glass touch layer on top (sometimes called the digitizer) and the display underneath that makes the picture. Here's how to tell which one is damaged:
- Probably just the glass: cracks you can feel, but the picture underneath is clear, with no lines or dark patches. Touch may be patchy near the cracks.
- The display too: coloured or black lines, ink-like blotches, flickering, a black screen while the iPad still makes sounds, or bright spots.
Why your iPad model matters
| iPad family | Screen construction | What's usually replaced |
|---|---|---|
| iPad (standard model) | Separate glass and display | Just the glass, if the display is fine |
| iPad Air | Laminated (one piece) | The whole screen |
| iPad mini | Laminated (one piece) | The whole screen |
| iPad Pro | Laminated (one piece) | The whole screen |

How much iPad screen repair costs in Ottawa
At Hotspot Mobile Repairs, iPad repairs start from $119. Glass-only repairs on the standard iPad are usually the most affordable; laminated screens on the Air, mini and Pro cost more because the part itself is more expensive. If you have AppleCare+ for your iPad, check your plan first on Apple's iPad repair page.
How long it takes
Many iPad screen repairs can be done the same day when the part is in stock. Glass-only repairs take longer than a phone screen: the old glass is glued in place and has to be removed without damaging the display underneath. We'll give you a time estimate with your quote. For phones and other quick jobs, see what can be fixed while you wait.
Should you keep using a cracked iPad?
For a short time, carefully. Cracked glass can shed small splinters, especially on a kids' iPad, and cracks tend to spread. Moisture and dust can also get in. A clear screen protector over the crack is a reasonable stopgap until you can get it fixed.
Before you bring your iPad in
- Back it up if it still works, with iCloud or a computer. Apple's backup guide covers both, and our backup checklist takes five minutes.
- Find the model name in Settings › General › About.
- Remove the case and bring the charger only if you suspect a charging problem too.
Repair or replace?
A screen repair usually makes sense on an iPad that still gets software updates. If it's very old or has other problems, use the 50% rule from our repair-or-replace guide. And if your iPhone took a hit too, here's what an iPhone screen repair costs.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fix a cracked iPad screen in Ottawa?
At Hotspot Mobile Repairs, iPad repairs start from $119. The final price depends on your model and whether it needs just the glass or the full display. Text your model and a photo to (613) 324-4994 for a quote.
Can you replace just the glass on an iPad?
On the standard iPad, usually yes, because the glass and display are separate layers. On the iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad Pro, the glass is laminated to the display, so the whole screen is replaced.
My iPad screen isn't cracked but doesn't respond to touch. What should I try?
Restart it first; Apple's guide for an iPad that doesn't respond walks through a forced restart. If touch still fails, the touch layer or its connection may be faulty, and we can diagnose it for free.
How long does an iPad screen repair take?
Often the same day when the part is in stock. Glass-only repairs take longer than phone screens because the old glass and adhesive have to be removed carefully.
Is it worth repairing an older iPad?
If it still gets software updates and the repair costs less than about half of what the iPad is worth, usually yes. Our repair-or-replace guide explains how to decide.
