The questions that pick the right plan

1. Where do you actually use your phone?

Coverage follows the network, not the brand. All three networks cover Ottawa well, but the differences show up in specific buildings, basements and trips. Check each brand's coverage map for home, work, school and anywhere you travel regularly, including across the river in Gatineau.

2. How much data do you really use?

Look at the last three months on your current phone (Settings › Cellular on iPhone, or Settings › Network on Android). Most people pay for more data than they use.

3. Do you call or text outside Canada?

If you call family abroad or travel to the US often, compare the add-ons and roaming options. They vary more than the base plans.

4. How do you like to get help?

Some brands are built around online self-serve; others have stores where you can talk to someone. Decide what matters to you before a problem comes up.

5. Is your phone ready?

Prepaid vs. postpaid: is prepaid right for you?

Prepaid means you pay before you use: no contract, no credit check, no surprise overage bills, and you can switch whenever you like. Postpaid plans bill you afterwards and often come with phone financing. If you already own an unlocked phone, prepaid is usually the simpler choice. The CRTC's Wireless Code sets consumer protections for wireless services in Canada.

Switching is easy, and you can keep your number
